Very few products live up to their claims and this epilator became our favorite immediately. For starters, the new model has a 40% wider epilation head that was able to cover more surface area in each stroke.

Why this is our favorite epilator
We were already familiar with its predecessor Braun Epil 7 and couldn’t think they could improve an already efficient epilator but after trying the new Braun Epil 9 we can confidently vouch for the newer model.  The best part of this epilator is its versatility and the ability to remove hair in different areas of the body. With the help of its 6 attachments, you can target hair on different areas on your body and face with the additional benefit of a facial brush that helps exfoliate your skin and prevent ingrown hair. The best way to exfoliate your face is in the shower when your skin is soft and this makes it a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the waterproof design that lets you use this epilator in the shower as well. The waterproof design also makes it easy to wash the epilator under the sink. With the help of other attachments such as shaver head, trimmer cap, skin contact cap, high-frequency massage cap, and the facial brush we wholeheartedly approve this epilator for the bikini area, legs, arms, underarms, face and anywhere else you can think of. The 2-speed function helps whether you’re approaching coarse or fine hair.

Philips HP6576 - Best Epilator for Travel

This is another addition to the list of epilators that can contour to your body and be used on all areas of your body for hair removal. This epilator is Philips most advanced epilator and includes 4 attachments that can be switched around depending on where you’re epilating. The 32 textured ceramic discs on this epilator are hypo-allergic and were able to remove some very fine hair during our testing. We believe the reason it was effective in removing fine hair was because of the vibration it provides during epilation, which according to Philips is known as the epilator’s active massage system. This feature outperforms other epilators because it even lifts flat heir lying on the skin and feeds it to the epilator head when using this device. The attachments included are shaving cap, trimming attachment, pivoting cap and the style attachment. This device is cordless but during our tests we noticed you can also use this while it’s charging which is a plus in case you forgot to charge it and are in a hurry. There is also a flashlight designed to aid during the epilation process. A drawback is that the device is not waterproof and cannot be used in the shower however you can use water to wash the epilator. This also means you should avoid using the epilator on wet skin or even sweaty skin. The unique travel lock system makes it the best epilator if you travel very often. If activated the travel lock will not allow the epilator to turn on in your luggage. The illuminating tweezer is an additional bonus that we found to be very helpful while tweezing our eyebrows, because the epilator has a wide surface that would not be suitable for removing hair in a very small area such as the eyebrows.

Pros
  • Best for legs, arms, underarms, bikini area and facial area (except eyebrows)
  • Attached flashlight assists during hair removal
  • Includes shaving cap, trimming attachment and style attachment, pivoting cap
  • Comes with an illuminating tweezer for eyebrows
  • Offers 2 speeds, low speed and high speed, for coarse and fine hair
  • 32 textured ceramic discs significantly reduced the pain
  • 40 tweezers are hypo-allergic
  • Cordless device, can also be used while it charges
  • Travel lock won’t disturb you during travel
Cons
  • It doesn’t work well on wet skin or sweaty skin
  • Device is not water resistant
  • Doesn’t include efficiency cap for sensitive areas unlike other Philips epilators
  • Charge time is an hour

Panasonic ES-ED90 - Best Epilator for Bikini Area

One of the reasons we like Panasonic’s Epilator is because it comes with 48 Tweezers that are good for pretty much any area on the body especially when used with its built in LED light. It also has a wide dual disc epilation head that makes it easier to cover large surface areas like your legs or your arms and the epilation head contours to the surface making it easier to reach tight spots. With the help of their gentle epilator head you can easily remove hair in the bikini area and other sensitive regions without worrying about hurting yourself. If needed you can also attach the shaver head with hypo allergic blades and foil to quickly shave off any remaining stray hair left behind. This is especially effective in sensitive regions, which makes this the best epilator for the bikini area.

Another bonus is the Pedicure Buffer attachment, which helps gently remove any dry and rough skin. This was a bonus we definitely loved since none of the other epilators came with an effective skin care product that also took care of our feet. The best time to clean your feet is in the shower because the skin is soft and luckily this epilator can be used in wet/dry conditions so we definitely recommend this epilator.

Comes with many attachments, including our favorite Pedicure Buffer attachment (very effective on feet).
Pros
  • Efficient at hair removal from everywhere in the body except facial hair
  • Offers 2 speed settings, for coarse and fine hair
  • Comes with a built in light
  • 48 Tweezers are higher than the usual 40 tweezers
  • Pedicure Buffer attachment is unusual and a plus, gently removes dry, rough skin
  • Comes with shaver and trimmer head. Also includes attachments such as epilation beginner cap, epilation head, gentle cap, foot care head and bikini cap
  • Ergonomic in design, noticeably easier to operate
  • Cordless operation, can operate for 40 minutes after recharge or more depending on your usage
  • Can be used under wet conditions, can also use it with gel or foam
Cons
  • Not suitable for facial hair
  • Few reports of ingrown hair after using this model
  • Cannot be used while charging

Emjoi AP-18 - Best Epilator for Legs

We found that most epilators are good at removing hair on the legs, but if we had to pick our favorite epilator for legs, Emjoi AP-18 would be our top choice. This is because of their 72 antimicrobial tweezer heads that are the most we’ve seen on an epilator so far and we definitely felt the difference in speed and efficiency. This was by far the most robust epilator we have ever used and it made it the perfect choice for hair removal on your legs, arms, underarms and the bikini area. We tried it on our face and don’t recommend it for facial area. It fulfilled the basic needs of an epilator and comes without the wet and dry feature, which doesn’t make it water proof. It only offers corded operation however the cord is 6.5 feet so we didn’t feel much of a difference. In fact we felt that connected to a direct power supply gave this epilator the power to continuously offer high speed and allowed us to get done quickly. It also helps that the tweezer heads are placed opposite to each other, which attacks every grain of hair from both against the grain and with the grain. The lifting fingers lift flat and short hair up and feed them to the epilator, which surprising worked really well on this model. For best results we recommend you begin using this epilator on slow speed because the high number of tweezers and a large epilator head work best when you run the epilator slowly and consistently against the grain of your hair.

Contains 72 Tweezers, which makes it perfect for surfaces with coarse hair (like our legs).
Pros
  • Not cordless, so it runs consistently with high power
  • Highest number of tweezers (72 tweezers)
  • More number of tweezers significantly reduces the usage time
  • Antimicrobial tweezers help prevent infection
  • More affordable compared to other high end models
  • Dual heads make it easier to operate
  • Offers 2 speed settings, low and high speed for beginners and experts, for coarse and fine hair
Cons
  • Does not include as many attachments as other competitors
  • Only offers corded operation, but the cord is longer than 8 feet
  • Heads get very hot after long usage, use carefully in sensitive areas when it gets warm
  • Device is not water resistant

Philips HP6401 - Best for Moderate Use

We tried the Philips Epilator HP6401 and noticed it is best suitable for flat skin surfaces like legs and arms. We tried it on our armpits and bikini area as well and it gave us acceptable results. But we noticed inconsistency when we used this product on our face. If you’re facial hair is thick and coarse we advise you to use another product for your face. However if your facial hair is thin and fine then this epilator can also be used for your face. For your sensitive areas there is an efficiency cap included which made it a little easier. This epilator also had trouble with very fine hair and we needed to repeatedly epilate those areas with very fine hair. Also avoid using it on wet or sweaty skin. There are only 21 hypo allergic tweezers attached to this affordable epilator, which is lower than the standard 40 tweezers, however it wasn’t a deal breaker because it performed well on most areas and costs lower than all other epilators.

Philips HP6401 is an affordable epilator best suited for flat skin surfaces, like legs and arms.
Pros
  • Includes efficiency cap for sensitive areas
  • Offers 2 speeds, low speed and high speed, for coarse and fine hair
  • Low speed helps reduce the pain
  • Affordable compared to other models
Cons
  • Only has 21 tweezers
  • Doesn’t remove thin fine hair effectively
  • It doesn’t work well on wet skin
  • Narrow epilation head, doesn’t cover a lot of area in each stroke
  • Doesn’t include a flashlight
  • Not cordless, but comes with a long cord
  • Louder than other models

Remington EP7030 - Affordable Device with Advanced Features

Remington’s Epilator was another member of our affordable epilators list but what surprised us was that there was no compromise on the number of features. It included the same features we found on other expensive options such as the detail light that can reveal even the finest hair, the waterproof construction that can also be used in the shower, massaging cap with Aloe Vera, cordless and ergonomic design with a pivoting head to suit your body’s contours. We found this epilator best suited for removing hair on the legs, arms and sensitive areas. There was some inconsistency with facial hair and results depend on the thickness of your facial hair. A bonus was how the massaging cap with Aloe Vera was able to soothe our skin directly after using the epilator.

Pros
  • Detail light helps see hair more closely
  • Waterproof design allows this device to be usable in the shower as well
  • Offers 2 speeds, low speed and high speed, for coarse and fine hair
  • Ergonomic design with built in grips best suited for legs, arms and sensitive areas
  • Cordless design
  • Flexible heads easily pivot in the desired direction
  • Comes with several attachments which includes precision cap for face area, precision cap for sensitive areas and massaging cap with Aloe Vera
  • Medium price point with the same features of high-end models
Cons
  • We experienced mediocre results in the facial region
  • Needs to be run over a few times to get rid of coarse hair

Epilady Legend - Best Budget Option

Epilady legend is our recommendation if you’re on a tight budget but don’t mind a few compromises. For example we noticed it took us longer to complete the same tasks with this epilator than with any other epilator despite having the same number of 40 tweezer discs. We also noticed some inconsistency in results. Certain areas were easy to epilate with this device whereas some areas needed a few more strokes. For example some facial hair were too fine to get trapped in the tweezers of this epilator and had to be removed with a tweezer despite running over them numerous times. We don’t suggest you push too hard against your face since that may cause temporary redness and discomfort. Instead just use a tweezer for problematic facial hair. You should also proceed with caution when using this epilator for your underarms and bikini area. This device does have upsides especially when you use it for your arms and legs. There are 40 tweezers in this epilator, which are the same number of tweezers found in high-end models. This model also gives you similar results as the pricy options when it comes to epilating your arms and legs. We tested it with different types of hair and it was mostly effective with short hair, especially in the legs and arms areas where the hair is usually coarse. Another hack we discovered was that this epilator can also be used while it charges so you don’t have to wait for it to charge unlike most rechargeable models

Pros
  • Affordable option
  • Suitable for legs, arms and face
  • Offers 2 speeds, low speed and high speed, for coarse and fine hair
  • Can be used cordlessly or while it charges
Cons
  • More difficult to use in armpits and bikini area
  • Results were mediocre in the bikini area, armpits and face area where the hair consistency and hair thickness varies.
  • Not effective at removing very fine hair, we often had to use tweezers after using this epilator
  • Cannot be used under wet conditions, so cannot be used in the shower

Emjoi Erase E60 - Compact Design

We tried this epilator after using Emjoi AP-18 and immediately noticed the compactness of this model. The small size gave us the benefit of maneuvering this epilator in tight spots and epilate with precision. This was especially true for facial hair because this epilator was able to catch the fine hair that no other epilator caught. The small surface opening meant less hair was pulled with each stroke but that also meant there was less pain. This meant we had to go over the same spot several times which is worth it if you don’t have a high pain tolerance. Despite having a small head Emjoi was able to attach 60 tweezers on this device, which is impressive given that most high end models only come with 40 tweezers. There is however no cordless feature and this epilator cannot be used on wet skin, which are the two main drawbacks that we noticed. The epilator also comes with a sensitive attachment for hair removal in sensitive areas. “Overall this epilator is best for fine hair but works well on thick hair as well.”

Pros
  • 60 Tweezers make each stroke powerful
  • Small enough to fit in a hand, can easily maneuver in tight areas
  • Comes with shaver head and sensitive attachment
  • Dual heads keep skintight during epilation
  • Medium priced
Cons
  • No wet and dry functionality available
  • No cordless feature, however the cord is long enough for normal usage
  • Doesn’t come with any precision cap for the face
  • Due to its low power, it sometimes takes a little longer depending on the person’s hair thickness

Emjoi Tweeze Erase E6 - Best Epilator for Face

Whether it is peach fuzz or thick coarse hair, epilation is the best way to target any unwanted facial hair. If you are looking for an epilator that specifically targets facial hair, then Emjoi Tweeze Erase E6 is an epilator built just for the face. If your goal is to only get an epilator for the face then this is the device you’re looking for. It is affordable because it only specializes in facial hair and includes 6 tweezers, which are the correct amount for a sensitive area like the face. It can also be used on other sensitive areas in the body because it comes with a safety feature that automatically stops if it is pushed too hard against the skin.

If you’re looking for a well-rounded epilator that is also good at removing facial hair then our recommendation is the Braun Facial Epilator (Braun Silk Epil 9), which with the help of an attachment can transform into a reliable facial epilator. A word of advice is to use epilators just for upper lip area, sideburns, chin, cheeks or even forehead. It is not advisable to use an epilator for your eyebrows despite the epilator using the same technique of tweezing. For your eyebrows stick to a tweezers/waxing because an epilator covers a large surface area and it is very difficult to pinpoint the epilator head in a small area such as the eyebrows even with the facial attachments that come with epilators.

Pros
  • Very portable, this is the smallest size you can get without compromising results
  • It is mostly geared towards removing facial hair and some hard to reach areas on your body
  • Geared towards sensitive skin and stops operating if its pressed too hard against the skin a safety feature worth having when you’re dealing with your face
Cons
  • Comes with only 6 tweezers however we noticed that this amount is the best number if you’re dealing with a sensitive area like the face.
  • This device is an upgrade from your regular tweezers but don’t expect it to epilate all parts of your body because there are better alternatives for epilating your body.
  • Requires 2 AAA batteries and is not rechargeable, need to change batteries often to maintain adequate speed.

Braun Silk Epil 7 S7561 - A Popular Classic

Before Braun Silk Epil 9 was every household’s top choice the Braun Silk Epil 7 was what every epilator looked up to. In fact we still recommend the Braun Epil 7 is you want the best but cannot afford the latest Braun Epil 9. The only major difference we noticed was that Braun Epil 7 had a smaller epilation head than Braun Epil 9. This does not mean a fewer number of tweezers, in fact both epilators have the same 40 tweezers attached to them but in a different arrangement. The arrangement of tweezers on Braun Epil 9 makes it more effective in grasping hair. This means that you may have to go over the same spot a few more times with the Braun Epil 7 which is an acceptable compromise since the price is comparatively lower. It still comes with a shaver head, trimmer cap for depilation, a sensitive area cap, facial cap, efficiency cap and a high frequency massage cap. Just like the newer model it is also cordless and can be easily used in wet and dry conditions.
Overall we found it to be best for arms, legs, bikini area and facial area. Consistent results in all areas of the body

Pros
  • Cordless design
  • Can be used in Wet and Dry conditions
  • Includes 6 extra attachments
  • More affordable than the latest Braun Epil 9 with just a little compromise
  • Shaver head, trimmer cap, sensitive area cap and efficiency cap included
  • High frequency massage cap helped ease the pain
  • Effectively removed fine hair and coarse hair
  • Consistent performance in all areas of the body
Cons
  • Only 40 tweezers
  • Narrow epilation head compared to the newer Braun Epil 9
  • Costs a little more than new models from other brands

The definitive guide to choosing an Epilator

Your hair and skin type determine which epilator will suit you best.

What is an epilator?

An epilator is a hair removal device that works with the combined effort of many tweezers. These tweezers continuously pull hair out from the root and leave behind smooth skin. However as with any hair removal method, there are going to be some short hair left behind which depends on your epilator and the thickness of your hair. Some hair is just too thin to get trapped in the epilator’s tweezers in one try. As expected with any hair removal method, using an epilator may cause redness or irritation in the skin, which quickly disappears after a few minutes.

Often times we settle for shaving, waxing, tweezing, laser hair removal and chemical creams but neglect the expensive costs and time consumption associated with these options. These methods leave us with irritation, ingrown hair, skin bumps, razor burns and damaged skin very quickly. Using an epilator can significantly reduce all this pain and effort. Epilators have similar results to waxing without the skin damage and pain, because unlike waxing treatments the skin is not stretched during epilation, instead only the hair is quickly pulled from the root.

Epilator Tips? Is epilating painful?

As with any hair removal method, there is some level of pain involved. Epilating is no different however we noticed it to be less painful than waxing and while there is some temporary redness in the beginning, it usually went away within an hour. We would advise you to exfoliate your skin for best results and pull your skin when epilating in that area. Also hold up the epilator at a 90 degrees angle and always move it against the grain.

How does Epilator Work?

Truth is most epilators are well suited for legs. The only noticeable difference between epilators comes down to whether they can handle facial hair, hair under armpits, arms, bikini area and other sensitive areas. Your criteria for selecting an epilator should be based on whether you need a device to remove hair in these other regions and if you would like the additional features that come with each epilator.

Some factors you should consider before buying an epilator are the number of tweezers in an epilator, cost of the epilator, is a flashlight included or not, is the epilator cordless or corded, size of the epilator, recharge time and if the wet & dry feature is included. Choosing the best is a decision that depends on hair thickness and how often your hair grows.

Epilator Vs Waxing?

Perhaps the most comparable alternative to epilation in terms of results. Epilation and Waxing both result in removing hair from the root, which leaves your skin hair free for the longest period of time. However compared to epilation, waxing is much more painful, messy and expensive. Not to mention that waxing also pulls the skin during hair removal and this causes damage to the skin in the long term. Your skin can loose its tight appearance and look stretchy over time.

Epilator Vs Shaving?

Shaving is a good alternative to epilation, however the results only last about 1-3 days (depending on your hair quality) and cause razor bumps and other uncomfortable situations for your skin. Shaving is also harmful for your skin since you run a razor on your skin every day to maintain good results. This method is not cheap either, buying new shaving razors often can add up and can cost even more than laser hair removal.

Hair Removal Creams?

Less painful than shaving, however long term use can cause irritation. Not to mention that these chemicals are harmful to your otherwise healthy skin and the damage caused can be irreversible. Results only last 2-4 days depending on your hair growth. Hair Removal Creams can end up costing a lot in the long run since you need to keep buying new supplies after you run out.

Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is one of the most effective methods of permanent hair removal, however it is also the most expensive option in comparison to other options. There is a catch, more than one treatment is required to permanently remove hair from a region and the number of treatments required depends on your hair type and hair thickness.
